CHANGING TIME WITH CHANGING COMMUNICATION

In this work, LED digits attached to mirrors
(mirror LEDs) mark time.
The blue digits count down from 9 to 1, and the red digits up from 1 to 9. The
LEDs have varying speeds: some are slow, some are fast. Zero never appears: instead
the display dims for a moment, then begins to count 9 to 1 or 1 to 9 again. The
moment of 0 is a metaphor for death, and the counting a metaphor for life. This
dynamic repetition of life and death represents the eternity of life, and acts
simultaneously as a metaphor for the radiance of life.
The mirror LEDs consist of blue LEDs and red LEDs mounted on facing walls. Blue
and red on facing walls would normally indicate confrontation or opposition. However
being covered in mirrors, mirror LEDs also reflect the place in which they are
installed, and the LEDs of the opposing color on the other side. This suggests
a "conversational" form that transcends confrontation. Incorporating
the surrounding scene, it changes constantly in appearance, yet from it emerges
a profound harmony not manifested in a single color. And the people who view the
work are always in the middle of that confrontation, listening to that voice.
With this installation I wanted to express the idea of dialogue between opposing
forces, and the unique rapport each of us possesses with other living things.
My hope is that the people who come here will listen out for the unique radiance
of living things, and a dialogue that transcends the differences woven by those
living things.
